do you want to read a bedtime story?
how about i tell you a little bit of the story of hawkeye and bunnygirl?
when Bunny met Holly - how it all began
Dovell's a small town, close enough to New City that the kids go there on the weekends, but no one from the city's gonna find themselves out here.
Dovell is pronounced like hovel, and everybody in Dovell calls it Dov. Looking at the place, you'd hardly believe the year's 20’. The place looks like a desert town you'd see in old movies. Even the streets are mostly packed dirt instead of the smooth tar of New City's highways.
It all starts in New City. First off, what a lame ass name for a city, right? It's like they just couldn't be bothered to come up with something better. The filler name on the draft just stayed 'til the end because none of the bigshots in office could think of anything better. From this boring and neglected city spawned miles of even more boring and neglected suburbs, and Dov was probably the last patch of people you could call a town until you hit the coast about 5 hours westward.
Who I am in this story doesn't matter. Our true protagonists are Bernedette "Bunnygirl" Mason and Holly "Hawkeye" Hawthorne, currently 5 and 6 years old, respectively.
Not everybody had nicknames in Dov, but the way of the place was that if you got one, it usually stuck.
when Bernedette became Bunnygirl
Bunnygirl got her nickname in the simplest way possible- she constantly wore her hair in buns.
Bunny's grandma was the best of the town's five hairdressers, and Bunny grew up enamored with her work. She was always ready to be a model for trying new styles, and over the years she developed a heavy preference for bun-based styles. Nobody knows why, she only ever says "I just like them."
So Bunny's consistent but stunning hairstyles became her signature, and Bunnygirl stuck. It's still rare to see her without some kind of bun incorporated into her hair. Only her grandma still calls her Bernadette, or Bernie.
Bunny was a quiet girl. She didn't talk much, but it wasn't because she was shy. She preferred to listen, take things in before deciding. Usually- though she's too nice to ever say this out loud- she just didn't care enough to share with whoever was talking.
Though she stayed out of most discussions, Bunny wasn't one to back down from a fight. The girl didn't take a lick of shit from anyone in her life. Bunny was always intensely capable. Grandma secretly worried that her tenacity and detatchment would leave Bunny feeling lonely. Bunny didn't feel lonely, though. At least not yet.
when Holly became Hawkeye
Holly never thought her name suited her. It was too pretty, too sweet, too girly.
